Acupressure and Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture has been used to treat pain and disease for over 2,500 years. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy runs in regular patterns called meridians throughout the body. The placement of small needles in acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals.

These chemicals either change the experience of pain or release other chemicals or hormones that influence the body’s internal regulating system and encourage the body’s ability to heal itself.

The placement of small needles or magnetic cups (needleless acupuncture) in these points has been shown to help the body recover from neurological and muscular disorders, digestive disorders, respiratory disorders, urinary, menstrual and reproductive disorders, and physical problems related to stress or emotional issues

In November of 1997, The National Institutes of Health stated that “acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative” for many clinical conditions including carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, tennis elbow, osteoarthritis, low back pain, asthma, headache, stroke rehabilitation, menstrual cramps, nausea, vomiting, post dental pain and addiction. Acupressure is similar to acupuncture except that pressure is used on the acupoints rather than needles.
