Holistic Surgery

Holistic surgery is similar to holistic medicine in that the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical aspects of patient care are considered. This is especially important when patients have had serious accidents and/or injuries, which require surgery. Proper identification of the spiritual, mental and emotional issues, which are pertinent to the injury, not only help the patient heal very quickly, but help prevent re-injury if the issues are identified and dealt with during the postoperative period. In addition, stress reduction techniques, meditation and other relaxation exercises are very useful during the pre and postoperative period to help the body heal at an optimal rate. Nutritional supplementation as well as attention to specific emotional issues such as needle phobias and hypnotherapy for smoking cessation and/or weight management help the patient in the preoperative period. Postoperatively, many of our practitioners including surgeons use energy medicine, including spiritual healing, in order to help reduce postoperative pain and swelling and help prevent infection, especially with infection-prone wounds such as human and animal bites and serious machine hand injuries. Holistic surgery’s goal is to help the patient utilize all the resources available to them in order to heal, not only physically, but mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well.
