Silicone Disease-Systemic Symptoms

Systemic Symptoms- Women usually begin experiencing more systemic symptoms soon after a leakage or rupture occurs. Leakage and/or rupture is a normal course for silicone gel implants and has to do with the time the implant has been in the body. There is a reaction within the body that breaks the shell down over time. Trauma and mammograms on older implants may predispose to leakage and/or rupture. Systemic symptoms fall into 3 categories including immunological symptoms, neurological symptoms and metabolic symptoms. Silicone is a known adjuvant and can affect the immune system by causing increased release of cytokines such as Interleukin 2. These may result in arthritis that is associated with silicone illness is therefore able to be treated with drugs such as Plaquenil (plaque-kwin-el), which is an Interleukin 2 blocker. A wider variety of symptoms including muscle aches, joint aches, dry eyes, skin rashes, loss of hair, etc. are common in women with ruptured and/or leaking breast implants. Neurological symptoms present as atypical neurological disease. Symptoms include numbness in the extremities followed by motor weakness. Many patients with leaking and/or ruptured implants are also dizzy and have cognitive dysfunction as well. Eventually silicone is felt to have a metabolic effect, which affects virtually every organ in the body and therapies which improve the energy of the patient seem to help the illness. The most important part of the treatment is to remove the leaking and/or ruptured implants including the scar capsule, which encapsulates them.
